The Montana State University (MSU) Pesticide Education Program with assistance from the Montana Department of Agriculture (MDA) is offering the Pest Management Tour for pesticide applicators across Eastern Montana, Private Applicator Training (PAT) District 4, from October 4th – 8th (Figure 1). Montana Private (Farm) Applicators within PAT District 4 should ensure they have attained 6 private applicator credits prior to the December 31, 2021 deadline to avoid losing their private applicator certification. Applicators can review their credit information at https://mtplants.mt.gov/ by selecting “pesticide programs” and “pesticide license search” prior to entering their license number. Applicators can also contact their local MSU Extension office for license information. Private applicators may opt to attend only a morning or afternoon session for 3 private applicator credits, or both for 6 credits. Commercial applicator credits can be viewed online at: https://pesticides.montana.edu/events/2021pmt.html.

Speakers will deliver presentations on managing rodents, managing herbicide resistant weeds, drought considerations when using pesticides, drought and weed management, preventing weed spread from hay shipments, small grain disease management and value of seed treatments, fungicide use in field crops, forage nitrates and key pests and a presentation troubleshooting the many reasons a pesticide may not work properly. Presentations vary by location (see program agenda). Representatives speaking on the tour include Dr. Cecil Tharp (MSU Pesticide Education Specialist), Dr. Hayes Goosey (MSU Extension Forage Specialist), Dr. Tim Seipel (MSU Cropland Weed Specialist), Noelle Orloff (MSU Associate Extension Specialist), Uta McKelvy (MSU Associate Extension Plant Pathologist) and Stephen Vantassel (MDA Vertebrate Pest Specialist).
