In order to obtain your Montana Private Applicator license after attending this event you must mail in the application along with the appropriate license fee. Carter and Fallon Counties are in Private Applicator District 4. The license fee for District 4 in 2021 is $12. Please bring a check or cash to cover this amount.
8:00-8:15 am: Welcome, Introductions, and outline of training (15 minutes)
8:15-8:45 am: Private Applicator License Overview (30 minutes), Amanda Williams – Fallon/Carter County Extension Agent
This session will cover pesticide definitions and classifications, the importance of the pesticide license number, the recertification process, the fees associated with your pesticide license and how those are allocated, and rules and restrictions related to pesticide licenses.
8:45-9:15 am: Reading and Understanding the Label (30 minutes), Amanda Williams – Fallon/Carter County Extension Agent
This session will go into depth on utilizing the pesticide product label and the parts to a product label. Label parts will include but not be limited to understanding the signal words and what they mean, reading pesticide ingredients, REI, directions for use, storing and disposing of pesticides, and importance of knowing the product use sites and locations.
9:15-10:15 am: Integrated Pest Management (60 minutes), Eric Miller – Garfield County Extension Agent
This session will describe what integrated pest management is, the benefits of IPM, understanding the economic impact of pests and when to take action, monitoring, pest identification, various control methods, and understanding pesticide resistance and how to manage for resistance.
10:15-10:30 am: Break
10:30-12:00 am: Pesticide Safety (90 minutes), Jesse Scott – Carter County Weed Coordinator
This presentation will dive into the toxicity, routes of exposure, LD50, and signal words of pesticides. First aid and step to take in the event of exposure or poisoning. Proper PPE for handling pesticides, and how to clean equipment properly.
12:00-12:30 pm: Lunch
12:30-1:30 pm: Pesticide Laws (60 minutes), Eric Clanton – MDA
The federal and state laws regulating pesticides, their uses, and importance will be covered in this presentation. Eric will talk about worker protection standards, FIFRA, Montana Pesticides Act, MPDES, and recordkeeping.
1:30-1:45 pm: Break
1:45-3:15 pm: Sprayer Calibration and Tank Mixing (90 minutes), Jesse Scott – Carter County Weed Coordinator
Jesse will cover the importance of sprayer calibration, various spray systems and how to calibrate those, nozzle selection, and calculating acres and product use rates. She also will cover tank mixing and proper mixing order while also discussing the different pesticide formulations. There will be some hands-on calibration and demonstrations of different spray systems.
3:15-4:15 pm: Pesticides in the Environment (60 minutes), Sara Berger – Fallon County Weed Coordinator
This presentation will cover what happens to the pesticides once they are applied. We will discuss how pesticides move in the environment and their behavior, solubility, absorption, pesticide persistence, and how pesticides breakdown once applied. This presentation will also cover drift in its various forms, and the factors that contribute.
